用来表达猜测，前者这个助动词通常用于否定结构（参见词目 195 、 196 和 197 ），而后者这个助动词则通常用于肯定结构；也可以这样说，在这种情况下， must 的否定式是 cannot ，不是 must not 。
例如：
It cannot be due to his ignorance. 这不是出于他的无知。
This mistake must be intentional. 这一错误一定是他明知故犯的。
比较：
Phil cannot have gone out because the light is on. 菲尔未必出去了，因为灯还亮着。
Phil must have gone out because the light is not on. 菲尔一定已出去了，因为灯已熄了。
